In this speech, I will report on the impact of the project on three levels: students, teachers and researchers. At the student level, the result is consistent with the Theory of Variation Marton and Booth’s Theory of Variation (1997) is drawn from the phenomenographical research tradition. It argues that there is no single way to understand, experience or think about a particular phenomenon; indeed there is considerable variation in people’s discernment.

To obtain sustainability of a learning study, variation theory is often put forward as a main key for its sustainability. Teachers state that they use the knowledge obtained through learning study while planning their other lessons. This website is my attempt to assemble a collection of high-quality, sequences of questions and examples using key principles from Variation Theory. By holding key features between questions and examples constant, together with the mathematical behaviour that I call reflect, expect, check, explain and the supporting role of the teacher, I believe we can help students better understand key 2019-05-06 mathematics and learning to teach mathematics with variation. Teaching with variation and variation as a theory of learning are brought together to be theorized and exemplified through analysis of teaching in a wide variety of classrooms and targeting both the content and processes of mathematical thinking.
